The purpose of a training needs assessment is to identify training needs or requirements in order to significantly boost the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed by employees to achieve organizational performance goals. An effective training needs assessment will help direct training to employees in areas of greatest need or demand. The assessment should also be helpful in further addressing training areas unidentified or unknown by the organization. When new training needs are known this can be useful in addressing potential training gaps and may provide useful information for discussion about the causes and reasons for the gap and training methods for closing or eliminating the gap.
