Sylvia Miner
Remembering Sylvia Miner 1924 - 2008
For more than two decades, associate professor of humanities, Sylvia T. Miner, taught English classes to students at Mount Wachusett Community College. From the requisite English 101 and 102 courses to classes in world and children’s literature, Professor Miner touched the minds of hundreds of students during her tenure.
A long-time resident of Massachusetts, Professor Miner was raised in Salem and lived most of her life in northern Worcester County. She was married for 60 years, and with her husband, David, enjoyed walks in the many forests and parks in the region. She was active in her church, the United Parish Church in Winchendon, and was an integral part of the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Wildwood Nature Camp for the 22 years that her husband was director. After retiring from the Mount, she and her husband traveled widely throughout Europe and the Caribbean.
Professor Miner died on Jan. 24, 2008 at age 83. In addition to her husband, she leaves four children, Brad, Brian, Cheryl and Alison; eight grandchildren; many members of her extended family; cherished friends; former colleagues; and alumni. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 31 at the First Congregational Church, in the Old Centre historic district in Winchendon.
Professor Miner was an avid reader, and the family requests that a book be donated in her memory to the children’s collection of a local library.
