Description: Joseph Carr Collection
These
are materials of Joseph Carr, furniture designer for Heywood-Wakefield
Company, given to MWCC by Mr. Carr’s family. Date range of items
is 1936, when Mr. Carr began work at Heywood-Wakefield, to 1992. Heywood-Wakefield
closed in 1979, but Mr. Carr did free-lance design work from his home
for other local companies, including S. Bent and George Bent.
- The
largest part of the collection is 3,500 design drawings and sketches.
Most are Mr. Carr’s, but a small number are by other designers
of the 1930s-1950s, including Leo Jiranek, Count Alexis de Saknoffsky
and Ernest Hermann.
- There
are approximately 500 furniture catalogs and approximately 500
catalogs of hardware and accessories.
- There
are 300-400 magazines and newspaper clippings, many with notes
by Mr. Carr.
- There
are approximately 1,000 photographs and photomechanicals, both
black and white and color. Most are black and white photo stills for
Heywood-Wakefield. There are also color prints from S. Bent and George
Bent companies.
- There
are approximately 100 file folders from Mr. Carr’s office
files, with correspondence, specification sheets, drawings, notes,
and price sheets.
Note:
There are also about 300 hardware and 550 wooden samples in this collection.
