MWCC PROFESSOR NAMED GRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLAR

Rocco Perla, MWCC adjunct professor in natural sciences, has been named the 2004-2005 Graduate Research Scholar for the Graduate School of Education at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The Graduate Research Scholar Award is the highest academic honor a doctoral student can receive in any one of the many graduate schools at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The recipient of this award is selected by a committee of faculty members at the Graduate School of Education and the criteria used to select the individual include: leadership, community service, academic excellence, and research. The central focus for this award is excellence in research as demonstrated by conference paper presentations, publications and previous research honors.

Perla most recently received a research award for his work on catastrophe theory models of scientific change from the American Educational Research Association, the oldest and most prestigious educational research organization in the country. With this honor, Perla becomes the first person in the Graduate School of Education’s history to receive both the Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year Award and the Graduate Research Scholar Award. On May 1, 2004 Perla was honored at the annual Graduate School of Education's awards ceremony.

Perla is an epidemiologist for HealthAlliance hospitals and is an advanced doctoral student in the Mathematics and Science Education Program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
