The Mount Wachusett Community College Foundation Inc., raised more than $20,000 to benefit scholarships at its 9th Annual Golf Tournament at the Sterling Country Club, Mon., July 26. This brings the grand total that the golf tournament has raised to date to over $120,000.

“More than half of all college students in the United States are enrolled in community colleges,” President Daniel M. Asquino told golfers and sponsors at the closing dinner. Asquino, who is beginning his 18th year serving as president, said he has seen a marked decline in state funding of the college. “Mount Wachusett Community College used to be supported by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by almost 90 percent. Now, we receive less than 28 percent from the state. Your support of events like this golf tournament, allow us to provide our students with what they deserve: the very best.”

The tournament featured a hole-in-one contest sponsored by Salvadore Automotive Group in Gardner, a travel voucher drawing from the Gardner Travel Agency as well as many other prizes.

Dinner guests bid on Red Sox tickets, Celtics Tickets and vacations at an auction featuring Dave Rodgers, of Fitchburg Savings Bank, who served as auctioneer. MWCC Foundation Inc., Executive Director Darlene Morrilly thanked Rodgers and all of the sponsors who made the event possible. “On behalf of all our students, I am so grateful to you for your generosity,” said Morrilly. “Your contribution truly will help someone achieve their dreams.”
