MWCC’s Computer Graphic Design Club recently raised $2,045 to benefit The One Fund Boston through the sale of specially designed t-shirts. Professor Leslie Cullen, chair of the computer graphic design department, designed the 3 Yellow Balloon logo and t-shirts after the Boston Marathon tragedy as a fundraising contribution for victims of the attack.
Following two explosions at the April 15 marathon, three yellow balloons floated above the ground as chaos erupted among the crowd. These three balloons became profound symbol of the three lives lost. The balloons also pay homage to all the victims and their long recovery ahead; they salute the heroes and the first responders who bravely aided in the hours and days that followed; and represent the manner in which all of Boston, the Commonwealth and beyond, rose together above it all, Cullen said.
“While I felt personally inspired and compelled to create the 3 yellow balloons graphic and subsequent t-shirt design, I wanted to get MWCC students and college community involved. As a proud professor of graphic design, I knew I could count on the school to support this fundraiser,” Cullen said. The CGD club, with the support of other student clubs and organizations, sold 235 t-shirts.
“I couldn’t be happier and more proud to see the college community come together and help sell, as well as buy these t-shirts in honor of the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings,” Cullen said. “It feels tremendous to be able to help those who lost their loved ones, and for all of those injured and in some small way, to make a difference.”

The balloons gracefully fluttered and floated above the ground as chaos erupted amongst the crowd. These three yellow balloons are now a profound symbol of the three lives lost in those fateful moments, Cullen said. They also pay homage to all the victims and their long recovery ahead; they salute the heroes and the first responders who so bravely aided in the hours and days that followed; and they appreciate the manner in which all of Boston, our communities and beyond, rose together above it all.
“As a professor of graphic design and someone who is passionate about this cause, I wanted a way to help,” Cullen said. “I designed the 3 Yellow Balloons graphic to represent the thoughts and feelings surrounding these tragic events, but most importantly it is a symbol of hope, strength, rising to challenges, and the power of the human spirit. By purchasing a t-shirt, you will be providing the 200-plus victims of the marathon bombings with much needed support in their long road to recovery.”
