MOUNT WACHUSETT COMMUNITY COLLEGES LIFE COURSES FOR OLDER ADULTS BEGIN MON., MAR. 4
(GARDNER) Older adults, 50 and over, are invited to register for the LIFE (Lifelong Learning for Enrichment) Program at Mount Wachusett Community College, offering non-credit courses on different topics. Classes for the first spring 2002 session begin Mon., Mar. 4. This session will feature: Growing Plants with Success, Inside and Out; Quilting is Fun; Watercolor for Beginners; Computers for Beginners; Genealogy via the Net; Internet Made Easy; Computers for Absolute Beginners; Computers for Beginners, Part II; Tai Chi; Line Dancing; Jazz, Ragtime to Cool; and Exploring Islam and the Mid-East. Most LIFE courses are scheduled in the afternoon and run for ninety minutes, once a week for five weeks. Annual registration fees for courses are $35 and most courses cost $30. The annual registration fee is good for one whole year no matter how many courses are taken. Craft classes may also have supply fees.
This spring, LIFE is also featuring:
Submissions are currently being accepted for Tapestries, an Anthology, featuring the original writing of those 50 and over. LIFE welcomes submissions of poetry, short stories, historical memoirs, as well as other prose forms of writing. Authors of selected works will be notified. The LIFE program sponsors a walking program for fitness walkers age 50 and over. The Mount Steppers meet Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. and walk together as a group. They also hear from speakers on relevant health topics. For more information, call Lorraine Wickman at (978) 630-9176.
The LIFE program is sponsoring a new book discussion group, "The Three Rs Book Club: Reading Remembering and Reflecting." Anyone age 50 and older interested in reading and discussing books in a group format is welcome. For more information, contact Lorraine Wickman at (978) 630-9176.
The "Fitchburg Golden Era Trolley Tour," Thurs., May 9 from 11:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., will begin with a lunch at the Colonial Hotel on Betty Spring Road in Gardner. Joy Contois of the Fitchburg Historical Commission will present a lively narrative on the second leading city of Massachusetts in 1900. Participants will first hear about Alvah Crocker and Helen Vickery, great philanthropists of the area. They will then view the headwaters of the Nashua River and actually see a house that was used as a station on the Underground Railroad. Many other sites will be included on the tour, such as the Vickery House, an early Greek Revival building with gingerbread trim. The Reynolds family, present occupants, is eager to share the story of the house which made such an impact on Fitchburgs history. The tour will begin and end at the Colonial Hotel. MWCC students and LIFE volunteers are now participating in a Service Learning partnership with Prospect School in Gardner. Currently, seven LIFE volunteers have been working with first through third grade students since September. The program is sponsored by MWCCs Service Learning Program and LIFE.
