FOLK ARTISTS NERISSA AND KATRYNA NIELDS AND OPENER STEPHANIE CORBY TO PERFORM AT THE WACHUSETT FOLK CAFE

(GARDNER) - Nerissa and Katryna Nields will perform at the Wachusett Folk Café at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, MA, Fri., Mar. 8 at 7:30 p.m. with opener Stephanie Corby. Sisters, Nerissa and Katryna Nields, are known for their harmonies, literary song-writing, and alternative-country/classic folk rock style. Local talent, and former MWCC student, Stephanie Corby has been described as a "soulful songstress," fusing her classical, jazz, and blues backgrounds into a distinct R&B-flavored acoustic sound.

Nerissa and Katryna Nields

Sisters Nerissa and Katryna have been singing together since they were children. After college in Connecticut (Nerissa went to Yale and Katryna went to Trinity), the Nields launched their music career in the New England coffeehouse folk circuit. By 1995, they had put together a five-piece folk-rock band and started touring nationally as "The Nields." Between 1994 and 2000, the Nields released six full length CDs, with tour dates all over North America, playing well over 200 dates a year. In 1998, the Nields separated from the band when they were asked to play the Lilith Fair without the men in their band.

The Nields’ new record, Love and China (to be released Tues., Mar. 5), is their first as a duo. Joining the sisters in the studio were Kevin Barry and Lorne Entress among many other talented players and varied instruments including fiddle, accordion, and pedal steel.

Stephanie Corby

Born in Ashburnham, MA, Corby began singing and playing at the age of eight. Corby, a former MWCC student, graduated from UMASS in 1990. As the lead blues woman fronting the nine-piece "Biggs Band," she built a deep repertoire of blues and R&B classics. During this time, she received private vocal lessons from a professor at the Berklee School of Music. In the mid-1990s, Corby left the band and entered Boston’s singer/songwriter circuit as a solo artist. For the past two years, Corby has been touring nationally. In May 2000, Corby had the distinct honor of performing on the Main Stage at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, TX as a New Folk Finalist.

Corby’s newest album, Fireworks in March, was released in October. Produced by legendary guitar player John Platania, who has toured and recorded with Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, and Natalie Merchant, the album also features a duet with Jimmy LaFave. Her previous CD was a live recording entitled, Live at the Prodigal Son, recorded at the Prodigal Son in Hyannis, MA on Feb. 21, 1999.

Tickets are $14 in advance and $16 at the door. The folk café is sponsored by the MWCC Foundation, Inc., Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, and Wachusett Brewing Company. The Wachusett Village Inn & Conference Center is a new sponsor of the café. All proceeds go to student scholarships. The Wachusett Folk Café features coffee, teas, and baked goods.
