(GARDNER)--Mount Wachusett
Community College will dedicate the Robert D.
Wetmore Center for Innovation in Design, Technology
and Resource Development, Wed., June
9 at 9:00 a.m. The dedication will include a breakfast and tour of the 12,000
square foot facility complete with classrooms and offices with the latest in
wireless, multi-media technology. “We have had a 30 percent increase enrollment
in the past three years and faced a critical space need,” said Mount Wachusett
Community College President Daniel M. Asquino. “We had to be creative in
aggressively pursuing grant funds and we were able to build the center with a
very limited impact on our budget during these tough fiscal times.”
The
center is named for Massachusetts Senator Robert D. Wetmore who served the
Commonwealth for over thirty years as both a
representative and senator. During
his long and distinguished career, Senator Wetmore authored an amendment to
the Massachusetts Constitution, which was adopted
in 1972, known as the “Environmental
Bill of Rights.” As House chair and founder of the Growth Policy Commission,
Wetmore promoted state and local planning to balance growth and development.
As chair of the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee and the Special Commission
on the Future of Mature Industries, Wetmore promoted economic development as
well as measures to establish special programs for dislocated workers.
“
We are very grateful to Senator Wetmore, not only for his years of public service,
but for his continuing relationship with Mount Wachusett Community College,” said
President Asquino. “We are very fortunate to have him as a friend and proud
to be building a center in his name.”
