Crime Prevention Tips

Always be aware of your surroundings. If you see suspicious persons or unusual behavior on campus, immediately call the campus police department at extension 111 from any phone on the campus.

In the Car

  • Keep your keys in your hand, in case you need to leave quickly
  • Always keep doors locked and windows rolled up
  • Any valuable items should be kept out of sight in the trunk or glove compartment
  • Never leave your keys in the vehicle, or leave your doors unlocked
  • Before entering your vehicle check in and around it
  • Never pick up a stranger, and never go with a stranger that offers you a ride. Instead have them call help for you
  • Always park in a well-lit area

In the Office

  • Lock unoccupied offices, even if you are only leaving for a few minutes
  • Keep desks and drawers locked
  • Store money or valuables in a secure spot

Protecting Your Property

  • Never leave your purse, wallet, or other property unattended
  • Don’t give personal information to anyone over the telephone
  • Don’t write any PIN numbers on your ATM or credit cards

Daily Activities

  • Trust your instincts, if you feel uncomfortable about a situation then you should attempt to leave the area
  • Know the locations of emergency phones on campus and how to get emergency help
  • Program emergency numbers into your cell phone
  • Always be aware of your surroundings
  • Be cautious of people that stop and ask for directions; stay a distance away from the vehicle
  • If at all possible never walk alone; you are much safer traveling in groups
  • Be confident while walking; maintain eye contact with people
