Health Information Management

Work in Healthcare Without Providing Direct Care

Health information management (HIM) is a little-known, but vital component of the healthcare process which helps ensure that the healthcare organization is compliant with state and federal regulations regarding capture, storage, and release of all medical data. This field is seeing rapid expansion with major federal initiatives that will require the significant new hiring of HIM credentialed people to meet workforce needs over the next ten years. Graduates will be eligible to enter the workforce as medical coders, documentation/coding specialist, and HIM revenue cycle auditors. Most health information management courses will be available in an online format. For more general information about this career, visit the American HIM Association.

The associate’s degree Health Information Management Program is in Candidacy Status, pending accreditation review by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

“When I heard about the Health Information Management program, I knew it would bridge my knowledge of computers with my interest in healthcare. Since most of it is online, I had the flexibility I needed to work while completing the program.”

Linda Coyne, 2016, Health Information Management
