Public Service Career-Building Opportunities

Interested in a career in public service? Current members of the AmeriCorps and Commonwealth Corps organizations will discuss their experiences and the opportunities available to others during two upcoming sessions. These short-term, volunteer experiences, open to anyone age 18 and above, can help build up a résumé, enhance professional skills and open doors to new career opportunities.

The AmeriCorps Job Ready program, a collaboration between Mount Wachusett Community College and Fitchburg State University, is sponsoring the events. The first session will take place Thursday, Jan. 24 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the North Café at Mount Wachusett Community College. A second session will take place Wednesday, Feb. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Hammond Campus Center at Fitchburg State University.

Participants in these organizations receive stipends for their involvement. AmeriCorps is an opportunity to apply skills and ideals toward helping others and meeting critical needs in the community. Each year, AmeriCorps offers 75,000 opportunities for adults of all ages and backgrounds to serve through a network of partnerships with local and national nonprofit groups.

The Commonwealth Corps engages Massachusetts residents of all ages and backgrounds in service to strengthen communities, address unmet community needs and increase volunteerism. This year, 50 Commonwealth Corps members are serving their communities, building organizational capacity across the state, and positively impacting Massachusetts residents in the focus areas of education, health/nutrition, economic opportunity/workforce development, and veterans’ support.
