Mount Wachusett Community College Student Receives Statewide Adult Education Scholarship
Mount Wachusett Community College (MWCC) student Sabrina Jean-Jacques has been selected to receive the Ruth E. Derfler Memorial Scholarship, presented by the Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education (MCAE), recognizing her exceptional perseverance and academic achievement.
Jean-Jacques received the scholarship during the MCAE Annual Conference on May 6, where she was recognized at the award luncheon and invited to speak before approximately 250 adult education professionals from across Massachusetts. Her selection highlights not only her academic success but also the determination and resilience she has demonstrated throughout her educational journey.
A resident of Fitchburg, Jean-Jacques has distinguished herself as a leader and scholar at MWCC. She is a recipient of the First Literacy Scholarship, awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence and perseverance while overcoming barriers to higher education. This spring, she was named to the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-State Academic Team, recognizing the Commonwealth’s highest-achieving community college students for their academic accomplishments, leadership, and service.
As a member of PTK, Jean-Jacques has embraced opportunities to grow as both a student and leader while maintaining a strong commitment to her educational and career goals. Her success reflects the transformative impact of adult education and the opportunities available through community colleges.
“The entire MWCC community is incredibly proud of Sabrina and all that she has accomplished,” said MWCC President James Vander Hooven. “Her perseverance, dedication, and passion for learning have earned her recognition at both the college and state levels. She exemplifies the strength and determination of our students, and we are thrilled to see her story inspire adult educators and learners across Massachusetts.”
The Ruth E. Derfler Memorial Scholarship honors adult learners who have demonstrated outstanding determination in pursuing their education and serve as a tribute to individuals who embody the spirit of lifelong learning.
“Sabrina’s accomplishments serve as an inspiration to current and future adult students, demonstrating that with perseverance, support, and determination, educational goals are within reach,” stated Kimberly Kayser, Transition to College Coordinator in MWCC’s adult education programs.
The Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education Annual Conference brings together educators, administrators, counselors, and advocates from across the Commonwealth to celebrate excellence in adult education and share best practices for supporting student success. As part of the conference, Jean-Jacques shared her personal educational journey, offering encouragement to educators and highlighting the life-changing opportunities that adult education can provide.
