SUCCESS Scholar’s Participate in Wreath-Laying Ceremony

On December 15, 2023, National Wreaths Across America Day, Mount Wachusett Community College’s SUCCESS Scholar Program took part in the annual wreath-laying ceremony hosted by Wreaths Across America at the Winchendon Veteran’s Cemetery. The mission of Wreaths Across America is to help communities Remember, Honor, and Teach generations not to forget the sacrifices made by our brave Veterans.

There was a great turnout for the event, families, friends, and volunteers; ready and eager to place wreaths and show their respect. The wreath-laying ceremony takes place in over 4,225 locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad. Anyone who wants to show their gratitude for the freedoms they enjoy today can volunteer at a wreath-laying ceremony. As a wreath is placed on a grave, individuals are asked to first fluff the wreath, speak the name of the fallen soldier, and thank them for their service.

Jessica Shea, a SUCCESS Scholar Advisor at MWCC has been attending the ceremony since her children (who are now adults) were in preschool. Her Uncle and Godfather David Rines, US Navy is buried at the Veteran’s Cemetery as well as her grandparents. Jess’s grandfather Manning Rines was part of the Army, he served with the 5th Armored Division in the European Theater Campaign during WWII and liberated concentration camps during the war. Jess says the wreath-laying ceremony “has been a part of our family Christmas tradition every year, and I look forward and am honored to take part in it!”

If you are interested in attending the next Wreath Laying Ceremony with Wreaths Across America, it will take place on December 14, 2024. Visit their website, www.wreathsacrossamerica.org to stay up to date with any changes and learn more.
