The good news is that some Massachusetts residents may be able to continue receiving unemployment benefits while attending college through the Training Opportunities Program (TOP).

Gain New Skills And Increase Your Employability At MWCC

At Mount Wachusett Community College (MWCC), we help students gain the skills they need for today’s workforce. If you’re looking to start a new career, TOP may help make your education more affordable while you focus on your future.

What Is The Training Opportunities Program (TOP)?

The Massachusetts Training Opportunities Program allows eligible individuals receiving unemployment benefits to attend an approved full-time training program while continuing to receive benefits.

If learning new skills will help you find a job, TOP may allow you to:

  • Attend a full-time approved training program
  • Continue receiving unemployment benefits without having to search for a job
  • Receive up to 26 additional weeks of unemployment benefits if you’re still enrolled in training after your regular benefits end
  • This can give you valuable time to complete your education and prepare for a new career.

Who May Qualify?

You may be eligible for TOP if:

  • Learning new skills will help you find employment
  • You can attend a full-time training program
  • You apply before your 20th paid week of unemployment benefits

What Are Your Responsibilities While Enrolled?

If approved for TOP, you must:

  • Continue filing your weekly unemployment claim
  • Attend and complete your approved training program
  • Complete your training within two years (or three years if basic skills courses are included)

Even if your training lasts longer than your regular unemployment claim, you may continue receiving benefits while enrolled, up to the program limits.

Need Help Paying For School?

The Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) does not pay for training programs. At MWCC, many students also qualify for financial aid, scholarships, and Massachusetts free college programs that can significantly reduce or eliminate the cost of attending college.

How To Apply For TOP

To apply for the Training Opportunities Program, contact the TOP Unit directly at 617-626-5521. Learn more through Massachusetts’s TOP webpage

It’s important to apply before your 20th paid week of unemployment benefits, so don’t wait.
