Sensory-Friendly Theater

Theatre at the Mount partners annually with The Arc of Opportunity (Fitchburg) to present sensory-friendly performances designed for children and adults with sensory sensitivities. These include a sensory-friendly show in late November or early December and a Spring Children’s Musical in April.

A sensory-friendly performance is modified to create a welcoming, low-stress environment for individuals with autism, sensory processing disorders, anxiety, or other cognitive, physical, or developmental disabilities. Adjustments include lower sound levels, reduced or modified lighting, low house lights remaining on, and a relaxed atmosphere where movement, talking, and exiting the theater are welcomed. Theatre staff and performers are specially trained to support these needs.

Families can expect designated quiet areas near the theater, space for movement, limited crowds, and trained, accommodating staff. Patrons may leave and re-enter the theater as needed. A nearby break room with tables, chairs, and a live video feed of the performance will be available throughout the show.

To help prepare, Theatre at the Mount provides a plot synopsis, a preparation guide, and a video social story on its website. Patrons are also welcome to arrive early to visit their seats and meet staff before the performance begins.

Guests are encouraged to bring comfort items such as fidget toys or headphones. Only bottled water is permitted inside the theater. Wheelchair-accessible seating is available for up to eight wheelchair users and companions and must be reserved by phone. Service animals are welcome. Assisted listening devices are available upon request, though ASL interpretation is not provided for this performance.

This is a judgment-free, inclusive experience designed for the whole family, where everyone is welcome just as they are.
