Our graduates leave ready to positively impact the lives of children, their families, and their communities.
There are several degree and certificate options available to MWCC students
Early Childhood Associate Degree Programs And Tracks
Early Childhood Certificate Programs
Early Childhood Certificate Program (ECE)
This certificate program prepares students for professional work with children from birth to age 5. The Early Childhood Certificate program is designed for those who are working in the field and wish to continue their education, as well as for those who are just getting started.
Early Childhood Foundational Certificate (ECF)
This certificate aligns with EEC requirements for Lead Teacher, contains 3-4 of the foundational courses required as part of the ECE MA transfer pathways, and contains an experiential learning component. As EEC’s credentialing system is undergoing revisions, this certificate was intentionally designed to align with the current certification requirements, and to fit within their proposed new credentialing system, considering both current and future needs of the early education workforce.
Why Study Early Childhood Education At MWCC?
Mount Wachusett provides unique opportunities for future teachers pursuing their associate degree. The Garrison Center for Early Childhood Education offers the opportunity to observe one of two active classrooms. During this 2-part practicum, you will spend 150 hours over the course of each semester working in an early childhood setting under faculty supervision. No matter which degree path you choose, this experience sets you apart from graduates of other universities and community colleges.
Our Educator programs promote high-quality early care and instruction. MWCC places an emphasis on understanding and meeting the state and national standards established by the Massachusetts State Department of Early Education and Care and the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

What Makes A Good Candidate For An Early Childhood Education Degree?
Great teachers aren’t born — they are made in the classroom. You can learn the skills you need to help children, whether you want to teach kids to read or have a heart for lifting up those with difficult home circumstances. The qualities of a fantastic educator include:
- Patience.
- Attention to detail.
- The ability to engage students.
- Outstanding communication skills.
- Excellent preparation.
You will receive the educational tools with ECE teacher certification, but you can also improve yourself in these areas while you take classes. Caring about children is more important than anything else. Your kindness and concern for our future generations will stand out when you pursue a career in education.
“I believe that by the time a child grows up, that child’s first teacher and second teacher and all the child’s important adults will have become incorporated into that child’s development…and will always be part of who they are.”
—Fred Rogers

Early Childhood Education Career Pathways

MWCC has been awarded a grant for Massachusetts residents that allows us to help interested students and early childhood educators advance their careers.
MWCC ECE Career Pathways has a dedicated Career Coach/Outreach Counselor to work with students who are eligible for the grant. The ECE Counselor helps new students enroll and continues to be the first line of contact with MWCC. The ECE Counselor also helps students to re-apply if they have not taken any courses at MWCC in over a year.
This is not a grant based on financial need. It is a grant to help alleviate the early childhood educator shortage and increase the education levels of educators who are already in the field. If you meet the criteria below, you will most likely qualify. (Elementary education, Early Intervention specialists, nannies, and ABA assistants are not eligible.)
MWCC Education tracks must be Early Childhood Education Certificate (ECE), Early Childhood Education Career degree (ECC), and Early Childhood Education Transfer Degree (ECT for Early Childhood).
Participants must be currently either:
- employed in a paid position at an EEC licensed or license-exempt program,
- intend to secure paid employment in an EEC licensed or license-exempt program of at least 20 hours per week, within 6 months of beginning the grant-funded program and with the assistance of job placement support from the college; or
- be a recent or near future graduate of Chapter 74 or other high-school-based programs with the goal of a career in early education or out-of-school time
We can help with placements for applicants who want to work with children in family childcare, center-based childcare, Headstart programs, public or private preschool, out-of-school-time (OST) care, or other EEC-licensed or licensed exempt programs who are not yet employed.
Caring for Children While Educating Future Teachers
Observation Classroom
The Garrison Center for Early Childhood Education is our lab school. It consists of two preschool classrooms which are run by the Montachusett Opportunity Council (MOC). In the center of the building, Early Childhood students attend class in the lab classroom. This room fits in between the two preschool classrooms so Early Childhood students can observe through the one-way windows. The sound system allows them to observe one classroom at a time.
