Health Insurance

State law requires that all students taking nine or more semester hours have health insurance (Massachusetts General Law Chapter 15A, Section 18). A charge for health insurance will be added to the student’s tuition bill unless proof of comparable insurance is provided. Please note that Health Safety Net, Commonwealth Care and coverage from carriers outside of the United States are not considered comparable coverage. The health insurance provider for the 2024-2025 academic year is Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, serviced through Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.

Students will be able to print an ID card online 24–48 hours after the insurance broker, Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.’s receipt of their enrollment at MWCC and the processing of the premium payment for the plan. ID cards are also mailed to the address the school has on file for the student.

If you take 9 credits or more, the state of Massachusetts gives you the option to buy health insurance. If you already have health insurance, you do not have to accept. However, you will have to take steps to waive this charge on your bill (see below).

If you are in need of the college’s health insurance, please send an email to sfs@mwcc.mass.edu and request that we enroll you.  This action must be taken in order to receive an insurance card.

International Students

“Coverage by insurance carriers outside the U.S. and coverage by foreign National Health Service programs are deemed not to be comparable to coverage under a qualifying student health insurance program. Students with foreign health coverage, other than students who are enrolled in a program requiring health insurance, and students whose coverage is embassy-sponsored that provide comparable coverage, must participate in the Qualifying Student Health Insurance Program.” 114.6 CMR 3.04 (3) (c).

Voluntary Dental Insurance

A voluntary Dental Insurance Program through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, serviced through Arthur J. Gallagher & Co is also available for students.

Out of State Residents

The premium charge for the Massachusetts Community College Health Insurance Plan will appear on your bill. All online waivers must be completed at registration time, by the due date of the bill, or prior to the opening of college, otherwise the charge will remain on your bill and payment will be required.
