Six Sigma Lean Green Belt Training

The Six Sigma Green Belt Training Course is offered by the Workforce Development Department at Mount Wachusett Community College through grants from the WorkForce Training Fund. What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is a method that gives businesses a set of tools that help them improve their business processes. The Six Sigma method has proven to increase performance and decrease variations in process that lead to defective products, thus helping businesses improve profits, employee satisfaction, and overall quality.

Why become a Six Sigma Green Belt?

A Six Sigma Green Belt demonstrates an employees ability to successfully apply process improvement initiatives. Six Sigma Green Belts are experts at identifying problems, analyzing data, and creating solutions to lower cost while improving quality.

The Six Sigma Green Belt course is an 8-day training program structured in four 2-day modules; one module for each of the Six Sigma “road map” steps, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. This program includes both classroom instruction and hands-on training as students are required to complete a project during the program. Class exercises are geared toward these projects.

Following the Six Sigma Green Belt training, students will:

  • Understand Six Sigma variation reduction methodology.
  • Begin to apply the Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control road map and spread the methodology to everyday work problems.
  • Assist Black Belts in Six Sigma teams and team projects.
  • Successfully complete “in the trenches” variation reduction projects of their own.
  • Become a mentor to others in applying statistical analysis to continuous improvement programs in their work environment.

Who should attend?

This 8-day course is appropriate for all levels and disciplines within the organization. It is especially relevant for technical employees in manufacturing environments, but can also be effective for those in transactional and service capabilities such as material control, information technology, and finance.

Six Sigma Green Belt Course Outline/Topics

Day 1-2:

  • Introduction to Six Sigma and program overview.
  • Value Stream Mapping (Finding & eliminating non-value added activity)
  • Process Mapping (Finding key input variables that drive customer satisfaction)
  • Establishing Metrics (“If you don’t measure it you won’t improve it !!”)
  • Basic Statistics and Probability

Day 3-4:

  • Graphical data analysis
  • Statistical analysis software (Excel and MiniTab)
  • Measurement System Evaluations (Gage Repeatability & Reproducibility)
  • Problem solving techniques (5 Why’s, C&E Matrix, FMEA)

Day 5-6:

  • Introduction to Process Capability studies
  • Introduction to Traditional Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Control Charts for Variables and Attributes
  • Rolled Throughput Yield (RTY) (Impact of “hidden factories”)

Day 7-8:

  • Hypothesis testing (t–tests for sample means)
  • Introduction to Control Plans and proper sampling techniques
  • Project Review and Presentation Skills
  • Combining “Lean” techniques and Six Sigma
