Academic Coaching

The Academic Disabilities Counselor works with students with disabilities on developing successful strategies to manage the academic demands of college. An academic coaching model is utilized to help students to discover their individual learning strengths and to become active learners. Throughout the semester the student and counselor meet on a weekly basis to focus on the following areas:

  • Setting goals
  • Identifying obstacles that impede progress
  • Establishing priorities and routines
  • Developing time management skills
  • Improving organizational skills
  • Learning study skills and test-taking strategies
  • Refining note-taking skills
  • Implementing active reading strategies
  • Reviewing developmental math concepts
  • Balancing academic, work, and family commitments
  • Strengthening self-advocacy skills

The Academic Disabilities Counselor provides a supportive environment to facilitate positive change and empowers students by helping them build self-confidence along with increasing their motivation and ownership of success.
