VIRTUAL TAMY AWARDS

For the past 15 years, Theatre at the Mount has sponsored the TAMY AWARDS celebrating excellence and achievement in high school musical theatre. This year COViD-19 has brought live theatre as we know it to a screeching halt and it seems unlikely to return any time soon.  Rather than cancel this year’s TAMYS we have devised a virtual program that will challenge theatre students and recognize outstanding performances and projects.  Monthly TAMY AWARDS will keep the “buzz” going and the top finishing school(s) at the end of the year will win the Grand Prize – a full two-year scholarship to Mount Wachusett Community College.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Each month students may submit entries in the categories below – deadline last day of month.  A panel of TAM judges will review the performances/projects and will select the winner of the TAMY AWARD for that month’s category. Announcement of the monthly winner will be made by the 15th of the following month.

Additional submission details will be provided prior to each month.

OCTOBER – Musical Theatre Solo

  • Students perform, record and submit a video of a song from a published musical theatre score
  • May use pre-recorded accompaniment tracks, live accompaniment, or acapella
  • Maximum 3 minutes
  • Costumes optional
  • Deadline to submit video – OCTOBER 31

NOVEMBER – Make-up Design

  • Students design make-up for a particular character in a published play or musical
  • Submit 6 photographs, featuring the design progression from blank face to finished product (photos must be JPG files)
  • Submit a paragraph explaining the rationale for the design (200 – 250 words)
  • Teacher must certify that the work is an original student design
  • All entries must clearly identify the name of the student, school affiliation, title and author of the play and the name of the character
  • Maximum number of entries per individual student is two
  • Deadline for entries: NOVEMBER 30

DECEMBER – Duet Scene

  • Two students perform, record and submit a video of a scene from a published play or musical; all scenes are limited to two persons
  • Scene may be comic or dramatic; contemporary or classic
  • Students may be in the same camera shot 6 feet apart, or in “zoom style”  recorded “live” or pre-edited
  • All entries must clearly identify the name of the student, school affiliation, title and author of the play, and the names of the characters portrayed
  • Maximum number of entries per individual student is two
  • Deadline for entries: DECEMBER 31

JANUARY – Set Design

  • Students design a set for a published play or musical
  • Submit 6 photographs, featuring the design progression from floor plan to set model; hand drawn or computer drawn are both accepted
  • Submit a paragraph explaining the rationale for the design (200 – 250 words)
  • All entries must clearly identify the name of the student, school affiliation, and title and author of the play
  • Teacher must certify that the work is an original student design
  • Deadline for entries: JANUARY 31

FEBRUARY – Monologue

  • Students perform, record and submit a video of a monologue from a published play or musical
  • Monologue may be comic or dramatic; contemporary or classic
  • All entries must clearly identify the name of the student, school affiliation, and title and author of the play
  • Costumes optional
  • Maximum – 3 minutes
  • Deadline for entries: FEBRUARY 28

MARCH – Props to the Choreographer

  • Students choreograph, perform , record and submit a video of a solo or duet dance from a published musical theatre work
  • Bonus points for creative use of props in the dance (can be as traditional as a hat or cane or something totally unique – be creative!)
  • Maximum 3 minutes
  • All entries must clearly identify the name of the student, school affiliation, title of song and name of show

APRIL – Musical Theatre Duet

  • Two students perform, record and submit a video of a duet from a published musical theatre show
  • May use pre-recorded accompaniment tracks, live accompaniment, or acapella
  • Students may be in the same camera shot 6 feet apart, or in “zoom style”  recorded “live” or pre-edited
  • All entries must clearly identify the name of the student, school affiliation, and title of song and name of show
  • Maximum 3 minutes
  • Deadline for entries: APRIL 30

WHO CAN ENTER?

Students from schools within 50 miles of Mount Wachusett Community College are eligible to participate.

IS THERE AN ENTRY FEE?

Yes, participating schools pay an entry fee of $100 which covers an unlimited number of entries in each category. (Schools who paid a TAMY entry fee last year are “paid up” and do not need to pay again. See list below).

HOW DO SCHOOLS ENTER?

Schools on the list above need only send an email to g_steele@mwcc.mass.edu indicating their intent to participate.

Schools not on the list above must send an email to g_steele@mwcc.mass.edu indicating their interest and making arrangements to pay the entry fee.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE GRAND PRIZE?

  • To be eligible for the Grand Prize/Scholarship Awards schools must enter a minimum of 5 categories. Number of entries in each category is unlimited.
  • Each school’s highest single score in the 5 categories is averaged. Highest average wins. If a school has entered more than 5 categories, we take only their highest scores, and drop the lowest category.
  • EXAMPLE: School A enters all 7 categories. Their highest scores in each category are: October – 8; November – 8; December – 7; January – 6.5; February 6.5; March – 7; April – 7.5. We drop the January and February scores and average the rest for a composite score of 7.5. (The monthly scores are not an average of all of their entries; it is just the highest score anyone from their school received.)
